Voyage To Afghanistan CD Lyrics

VOYAGE TO AFGHANISTAN

As I sit here in my room, thinking hard 'bout what to do, I start thinking I've been thinking way too much.  Time to totally relax,  find someone to scratch my back,  then just lay here watching night turn into you.  Something in the way you breathe with your mouth open unsettles me,  makes me think I missed out on life and you could breathe life in me . . like air-conditioning.. or a good movie,  like some cash in my hand,        A VOYAGE TO AFGHANISTAN. In a place where no one goes,  there's a path that no one chose,  and its leading to a large uncovered hole.  If you drop a rock just right,  you can listen most the night,  and you'll never hear it say it's satisfied.  Imagine the shocked surprise on your friends and family, as you leave the comfort of home for the raging sea, with a guy like me,  on an insane trip to trace the roots of humanity,  A VOYAGE TO AFGHANISTAN.

A DOG CALLED MAN

When I saw myself, standin' next to me,  I couldn't help but see the similarity had faded like somebody's two-week-vacation-summer-tan.  One had a problem, and one had a dog he called man. When the king came down to the truck-stop-town,  there was a big parade,  it was a big let-down.  We thought that an answer was there in his  uncallused  hand.  We had a problem , he left us a dog he called man.  Meanwhile outside, no one walked alone at night. The missionaries left on ferries, ' bound for foreign sanctuaries.   One held a sign that said, "  Its Time  To Forget Your Problems  And Find Food  For That  Dog Called Man ."   It was a giant dog,  almost forty feet,  as the day went on we knew it had to eat.  We offered our lemons,  we offered our tasty home-made pies.  The dog ate religion with soda and large-order-fries.

BUS EXHAUST                                                                                                                     listen

The fortune-teller told me a lie,  she said I'd have to live 'til the day I die.  It's been five long years in this living hell,  there's a hive of bees sleeping right next to my head.  GIMME-A-HIT OF BUS EXHAUST  'cause I'm feeling lonely and  I'm feeling lost.  I had a wife and a reason to be stable,  had the best things in life laid right on my table. Then a strange disease sent me cryin'  to the doctor who took me to the cleaners at ninety bucks an aspirin.  GIMME-A-HIT OF BUS EXHAUST  'cause I'm feeling lonely and  I'm feeling lost.  Make it a side of   PESTICIDE  'cause I feel like a cockroach that got caught in the light.  The police, prostitutes and dealers all avoid me,  this government official stamped a giant void right on me.  Passing like a ghost through the land of fake emotion,  got a fortune here in wisdom and some land under the ocean,   GIMME-A-HIT OF BUS EXHAUST  'cause I'm feeling lonely and  I'm feeling lost  make it a side of  PESTICIDE 'cause I ain't got nobody standin' here by my side.  oh that feeling, feels like comin'  home,   back home....GIMME-A-HIT .

OFF

I stole five dollars from myself.   I saw it sitting on the shelf.  No one was looking so I took it for myself.   I spent five years inside a box,  I couldn't walk,   I couldn't  talk,  until I found out the box was never locked.  Whatever it is, I don't want it.  Whoever it is,  I don't need it.  All that I really want is to get whatever's on my mind ... off.   I took a trip to who knows where.  I shared a cab with Fred Astaire.  He couldn't face the fact that we were almost there.  I touched the stone that they say cures.  It cured my need to be absurd.  So I touched the tour-guide and she turned into a bird.  Whatever it is,  I don't want it.  Whoever it is,  I don't need it.  All that I really want is to get whatever's on my mind... off.

ALL BY CHANCE

Well,  I've had my share of drink,  I'll say just what I feel.  I'll commit it all to tape,  so it can be held against me.  Are you listening?  Are you ready now to hear?   It happened all by chance.  Exactly as i planned.  Exactly as i knew it had to be.  Now I've got to live with this one reality.  Must've stoodthere for a thousand years, watching the shadows cross your face. Then all of a sudden, you're standin' next to me.  What a wonderful human race.  It happened all by chance.  Exactly as I planned.  Exactly as I knew it had to be.  Maybe one time you'll look me in the eye and scream.... You are the panic in my heart.  You,  you're where all my problems start.  You bring me face to face with life and love, and everything  I try not to think of.  So I said it and you know.  I guess it's time for me to go.  I'm only hoping when you look back on your life,  it happened all by chance.

WHAT ARE PEOPLE ?

Wiped up the blood from the mirror.  Oh it was nothing serious,  I just cut myself shaving. Thought about life as I lit up a cigarette,  and the gallon of blood that keeps me alive.   What are people, anyway?Climbed up the hill to look out on the city lights,  millions of strangers on a cold, cold night. Each set of eyes seein' things a little differently,  then in the end it all comes down to property.  What are people, anyway? People can be good fun.  People will hang around, if you let 'em.

NO WALLS, NO BRIDGES

When I was a boy, I had a dog who understood every word I said.  Long sunny nights spent in conversation  about events of the day.  They've got a place where they put the insane people.  Folks just like you, who  saw something,  heard something,  know something more than meets the eye, or maybe they cried at the wrong time.  Can't live with restriction, no walls and no bridges.  When I was a man and I felt blue,  I was not sad, I was the color blue.  Flames through and through, and no one there to tell me what to do.  They've got a place where they put the insane people.  Folks just like you who saw something,  heard something,  know something more than meets the eye,  or maybe they cried at the wrong time.  Can't live with restriction, no walls and no bridges.

WHEN  YOU  GO  DOWN                                                                                                  listen

Why can't I be in every window,  everywhere in the world.  Looking out at a billion faces, the next one better than this.  I will always be trapped inside this mystery,  but I will always be the one who sticks around . . .when you go down.   Why can't  I be in every window everywhere in the world ?  Always bathed in a sea of sunshine, everyday of the year.  I could never be trapped inside your tragedy,  but I will always be the one who sticks around . . .when you go down.   See through me,  I'm in your window.  Happily I see it all.  Open me,  I'm in the arms of a woman who knows,  how to give up and let go.  I will always be the one who sticks around . . .    when you go down.

REALITY

On the 15th floor, where the bosses cry for more and more delightful things to crawl across the floor. They have a word they use to justify every time they steal, cheat, or lie...REALITY,  it seems is a fistful of broken dreams. You do what you have to do and not what you want to. I can't face     REALITY.On the street below, there's some faces we all know. Homeless joe and bob-the-boy-next-door. They sell directions to the houses of the stars. They live in boxes and cash their checks at bars. REALITY, it seems is a fistful of broken dreams. You do what you have to do and not what you want to. REALITY, my friend, that's what's left at the bitter end.  A crumb from the cake carved in the face of disaster.  I can't face..... REALITY.i was awoken by a scream the other night. They say she even tried to put up a fight. I rolled over and turned out the light on another life. I saw this child, an innocent child, standin' in the street screamin,'   "where's my mamma."

AN AMERICAN BUM                                                                                                        listen

They set you up while you're still in the swing.  With one big push you could have anything. You know one day you will live like a king.  They hook you up to a giant machine.  You're on  your way,  you're feeling so mean.  You buy a car, but they sold you a dream.   It's hard to be an American Bum.  The war's been fought, that war's been won,  collect your pay when the week is done. You're satisfied with two weeks in the sun.  There's bums in suits,  there's bums in the street.  There's bums who starve, and others who treat.  There's bums who work eighty hours a week.  It's hard to be an American Bum. You try your best,  you do what you can,  you give it all for your small piece of land.  You build your house but it's made out of sand.  'Cause everyone is out for their own,  you fall behind and they take all you own.  Nobody cares if you're if you're sick or you're old......              but oh, that open road is calling louder than before,  its paved with all the pain of things you never got,  look in the distance at the Land of Oz.

EVERYBODY 'S  DOIN'  BETTER THAN ME

Everybody's doin'  better than me,  everybody and their sister Marie. Everybody's doin'  better than me.  Everybody's got a color TV,  a hundred channels and de-coder for free.  Everybody's doin'  better than me.  Everybody's got a college degree, plans for the future that don't include me. Everybody's doin' better than me.   Everybody's got a modelesque face, life's an adventure at a super-high pace.  Everybody's doin' better than me.  I try my best to think everything through.  I analyze what is what and who is who.  While I sit thinking the train leaves the station,  I never get where I'm going to. Everybody's got a beautiful view,  high on a hillside with jacuzzi and pool.  Everybody's doin'  better than me.  Everybody's got an Uncle Ramone waiting patiently to give 'em a loan.  Everybody's doin' better than me.  Even people in the military see the world and get some money for free,  yeah everybody's doin' better than me. Everybody's in a rock'n'roll band,  making records and touring Japan. Everybody's got a high set of hopes, matching towels and some good friends who know everybody at the top of the heap.  Everybody's got American Dreams to stay at home eating peaches and cream.  Everybody's got a stash in the bank,  credit cards and an accountant named Frank.  Everybody gets some sex on the side,  secret lovers that they try hard to hide.  Everybody's in a huge secret club, they talk about me when I'm not around.  They're united together in a conspiracy.  And they're doin'  better than me.

THE PROMISE OF SATURDAY

Sometimes when I can't sleep at night, I draw the shades and look outside.  Rows of rooftops all exactly the same, cover people who will never change.  I watch them come, and I see them go, they walk in circles and I'm sure they don't know.  'Cause its ice cold beer and a Sunday drive,  the promise of Saturday can keep you alive.  When they lay in bed at night,  everything's all right.  They got a lot to do  'til Saturday.  So far away. The promise of Saturday can keep you in line. I tried, but I couldn't decide,  what kind of compromise I'd make to survive.  So many people window-shop for a vacation,  wind up spending all their time stuck in hesitation.  When they lay in bed at night,  everything's all right.  They got a lot to do 'til Saturday.  So far away. The promise of Saturday can keep you in line.  Love, lust, pride, greed , fear and hate.  They're all games  to make you sweat, I had to wait.  I wait for freedom to deliver me from games. When I'm hungry I'll eat anything. And I saw it comin' back.  It was the last page of the book.  The page I'd never seen.  The one explaining games (success in reality).  I read it everyday, practiced what it said. Still I can't wait 'til Saturday.

BONEMAN

All of the people in all of the world.  Everyone's waiting. Everyone's waiting for the boneman.  Some are  unhappy or misunderstood    Everyone's waiting for the boneman.  Boneman,  is it really worth the wait ?   'Cause I found out yesterday you never give a dog a bone, man.  You leave 'em on his own, man.  Outside.  All of the people in all of the world.   Everyone's waiting for the boneman.  Some are unhappy or misunderstood.  Everyone's waiting for the boneman.  She stopped doing what she was doing, and said she couldn't go on until she got that thing.  No one could put their finger on exactly what  that thing was,  but they all started looking...        All of the people in all of the world.    Everyone's waiting.
